That's a real limitation. Rewire is actually quite cool as it can do 32 channels of audio, but only Reason can send over Rewire.

ReaStream is a VST plugin that sends 8 MIDI + 8 Audio streams over local network and I use it a lot, and when I want to connect ASIO apps, Reaper has a solution, too: ReaRoute ASIO driver - this one can do 32 channels of audio between ASIO apps on the same computer.
